A3 Sardines Print – Hand-Carved Linocut Marine Wall Art
Size: A3 (approx. 29.7 x 42 cm)
Paper: Chinese Xuan paper backed with two layers of Japanese Masa paper
Edges: Torn-edge
Medium: Blue and metallic gold acrylic ink
This A3 sardines print is created using hand-carved linocut stamps printed in blue and metallic gold acrylic ink. Multiple fish stamps are used across the surface to build a sense of movement and flow, suggesting a shoal of sardines moving through the water.
Printed on delicate Chinese Xuan paper and backed with two layers of Japanese Masa paper, the piece combines the fine texture of traditional printmaking papers with added strength and stability. The layered backing enhances durability while preserving the character and softness of the original sheet.
The deep blue ink establishes form and direction, while metallic gold highlights catch the light and emphasise the rhythm and repetition created by the stamped fish forms.
Each print is individually hand-printed using hand-carved lino blocks, meaning subtle variations occur in every impression. The torn edges are designed to be float mounted so the texture and craftsmanship of the paper remain visible.
Part of my ongoing exploration of marine subjects through printmaking, this work combines traditional relief printing methods with a contemporary composition focused on pattern, motion, and repetition.
