I created this piece by printing the same sea bass again and again in black sumi to build the feeling of a moving shoal. Working with sumi is always a bit of an adventure—its fluid, unpredictable nature makes it far trickier than acrylic ink, and it can shift while I’m wet-mounting the paper. That challenge is part of what I love about it; each impression takes on its own life.
The prints are on Chinese xuan paper, which I flattened and strengthened with Urauchi, a traditional backing technique. After the triptych was complete, I felt the final panel needed something more, so I collaged in one extra fish. I applied it using the same Urauchi method, so it blends in seamlessly with the rest of the work.
This piece was framed for exhibition and shown at the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ annual show in 2024—a highlight for me. This piece captures the quiet movement and energy of the sea bass that inspired it.
The piece has been professionally framed. It will be posted out and marked fragile. Shipping within the UK is included in the price shown. Other territories will incur additional costs.
