“Trace Elements” is a contemporary Gyotaku print by Anglesey-based artist Jane Evans. Traditionally used to record the details of marine life, the Gyotaku method here is innovatively reimagined using a crumpled helium balloon and a discarded metal camera film canister—objects found washed up on local beaches. By applying ink directly to these fragments of modern detritus, Jane captures their surface textures with exacting detail, transforming refuse into striking marks of reflection.
Printed on delicate yet durable Chinese Xuan paper, the work has been professionally wet mounted (Urauchi) to preserve and flatten the surface for display. A repeated matrix of forms—each subtly unique—suggests tide patterns, erosion, and human impact on the sea. The addition of a bold red sphere alongside each print imprint nods to traditional Japanese aesthetics while evoking urgency, warning, and balance.
This piece speaks to both environmental fragility and the evolving nature of traditional printmaking. It is ideal for collectors of marine-themed art, contemporary printmakers, or those drawn to work with layered ecological meaning.
