This striking print by Jane Evans, an Anglesey-based artist working from her garden studio overlooking the Menai Strait, reimagines the traditional Gyotaku method using a carefully carved lino cut in place of a real prawn.
Printed onto delicate Chinese paper with high-quality acrylic inks, the piece faithfully honours the spirit of Gyotaku — the ancient Japanese art of nature printing. Just as a real fish would be inked and pressed to paper, Jane uses her lino cut prawn in the same way, transferring the form and detail in a single impression.
Each print is individually finished: the eye is hand-painted, while the entire work is completed using the traditional urauchi wet mounting technique. This final process not only flattens and strengthens the paper but also gives the print a refined, archival-quality finish.
A fusion of tradition, craft, and coastal inspiration — this artwork is a unique celebration of marine life and printmaking heritage.
