GYOTAKU GIFTS
Megrim Sole Gyotaku
Megrim Sole Gyotaku
As you will see the Megrim Sole is a flat fish. Gifted to me by someone in the fish processing industry this lovely fish has such a distinctive lateral line and in this lovely blue it make it almost look like stitched denim or is that just me?
I'm told that in an attempt to broaden the range of fish we eat here in the UK there is a move to rename this fish, Devon Sole. I assume that an association with a place that people see as beautiful coast, will make it more desirable than Megrim?
The more I make Gyotaku, the more respect I have for the creatures I work with and if they are treated well, their use can be optimised so that the fish can be printed many times before it needs to be disposed of in the food composting. So this fish is in my freezer and will be used many times.
Actually it's my go to fish for sessions with younger children as it's much easier to print from a flat fish than a round fish. Did you know all flat fish start off with an eye on either side of their head and as they grow one eye migrates around as they start to settle on the floor of the ocean? It's another reason I like to use this fish when showing children Gyotaku, they love this fact.
This print is made in acrylic in which is light fast and permanent. It was made on Chinese Xuan paper and has been flattened using the wet mounting process.
It is offered for sale here in a mount. The print itself measures approx 35cm x 70cm but with the mount the overall dimensions are 45cm x 79cm. As you will see the print and mount are wrapped in cellophane.
Shipping within the UK is included and I usually aim to ship within 5 working days. As ever feel free to ask me questions. Jane
