This triptych gyotaku captures the elegance and vitality of a sea bass in rich gold and blue ink. The ink is both light fast and permanent.
Using the traditional Japanese technique of gyotaku—printing directly from the fish—Evans achieves remarkable detail and texture, celebrating the natural form of the creature with both accuracy and artistry.
Printed on fine Chinese xuan paper, the three panels form a flowing composition that mirrors the movement of the sea. The interplay between the shimmering gold and deep blue ink creates a dynamic, almost ethereal quality that shifts with the light, inviting repeated viewing.
To preserve and present the work with integrity, the triptych has been backed using the urauchi method, a traditional Japanese mounting technique. This enhances the durability of the delicate paper while maintaining its natural softness and translucency.
Evans' work bridges Eastern and Western traditions, blending ancient technique with a contemporary palette. This piece makes a powerful statement in any setting—ideal for collectors of fine printmaking, coastal and marine-themed art, or anyone drawn to the quiet elegance of nature expressed through refined craftsmanship.
Each panel measures approx 69cm high by 34.5cm wide. Shipping within the UK is free and for other territories is calculated at check out. Please send me a message if you need any further information. Jane
