This print was made using a piece of sugar kelp collected during an exceptionally low tide on the Menai Strait, Anglesey. A marine biologist from Bangor’s School of Ocean Sciences helped me identify the right location and timing to gather it — as sugar kelp grows further out and is only accessible at the lowest tides.

At the restricted 6 x 6 inch scale, the subject becomes almost unrecognisable — a field of texture rather than a specimen. Sugar kelp’s deeply ridged surface creates rich detail in the print, revealing folds, channels, and shadows that invite close inspection. Printed using sumi on handmade Thai Mulberry paper and mounted with layered Masa paper backing, each piece is hand-torn and individually made.

All prints are original — not reproduced. Shipping is free within the UK, and you're welcome to contact me directly with any questions.

Part of the ongoing 6x6 Collection — a quiet study of material, place, and close observation.
