A5 Kelp Print – Gyotaku-Inspired Marine Wall Art
Size: A5 (approx. 5.8 x 8.3 inches) | Paper: Handmade Thai Mulberry | Edges: Hand-torn | Ink: Sumi
This hand-pulled sugar kelp print captures the texture and intricate detail of kelp collected from the Menai Strait, Anglesey, during an exceptionally low tide. With guidance from a marine biologist at Bangor’s School of Ocean Sciences, the kelp was gathered at the precise location and timing when it is accessible, ensuring authenticity and connection to place.
At this A5 scale, the print transforms the kelp into an abstract study of texture rather than a literal specimen. The ridged surface, folds, and channels of the kelp create a rich, tactile impression in sumi ink, heightened by the handmade Thai Mulberry paper and layered Masa paper backing. Each print is hand-torn and individually created, making every piece unique.
Part of the ongoing 6x6 Collection, this work continues a quiet exploration of material, place, and close observation.
