Tangle Kelp

Tangle Kelp – Menai Strait
This print was made using a piece of tangle kelp collected during an exceptionally low tide on the Menai Strait, Anglesey. A marine biologist from Bangor’s School of Ocean Sciences helped me determine the right location and timing to gather it — as tangle kelp grows further out to sea and is only accessible at certain tides.

At the restricted 6 x 6 inch scale, the subject becomes abstracted. Without its full form, the kelp is reduced to surface texture and mark, inviting the viewer to look more closely and consider what they’re seeing. Printed using sumi on handmade Thai Mulberry paper and mounted with layered Masa paper backing, each piece is hand-torn and individually made.
