A striking original Gyotaku print of a turbot, hand printed in a vibrant bright blue ink onto beautiful white handmade Thai Mulberry paper.
Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing from a fish, capturing its natural shape, texture and intricate details. The distinctive form of the turbot is beautifully revealed in the bold blue ink, creating a fresh and contemporary interpretation of this traditional art form.
The print is made onto white handmade Thai Mulberry paper, chosen for its beautiful natural texture and delicate fibres. The organic character of the paper complements the natural markings of the fish, while the bright blue ink creates a wonderful contrast against the clean white background.
The finished print is carefully mounted using the traditional Japanese Urauchi method. This involves backing the delicate Mulberry paper with another sheet of paper using wheat paste. The process strengthens and flattens the artwork while retaining the beautiful qualities and texture of the handmade paper.
As with all handmade Gyotaku, each print has its own individual character. Slight variations in the ink, texture and detail are part of what makes each piece unique.
